Report to Donors

The mission of Community 101 is to provide students with opportunities for service and leadership through charitable giving and volunteering.

Founded in 1997, Community 101 is a program of The Oregon Community Foundation, with major support from the PGE Foundation.

"Community 101 is my favorite philanthropic effort. The students learn so much so fast on many levels."

Community 101 Alumna Kelsey Pine

"Community 101 is social action in movement -- engaging youth who may work at nonprofits or give funds in the c101 studentfuture."

Kelsey participated in the C101 program through the Social Education and Law class at Glencoe High School, graduating in 2003.

Kelsey wasn't aware of philanthropy or nonprofits until her involvement in Community 101. Her parents conducted charitable giving on Sundays through church tithing, but they did not talk to her about the act of philanthropy itself. It was, as Kelsey said, "just something they did."

But Kelsey found that "Community 101 touches on so many more things than just giving." In fact, it was an informational speech from a CARES NW representative who applied for Community 101 funding that piqued Kelsey's interest in mental health organizations. Through her participation in Community 101, Kelsey interned with the Washington County Juvenile Probation Department. She then went on to earn a BA in Social Science from Portland State University. Kelsey is now utilizing her marketing skills for the I Have a Dream Foundation – a nonprofit organization that works with at-risk youth from the elementary school years through high school to help them become productive citizens.

Eight years later, Kelsey has this to say about Community 101: "I want to do it again!"

Students Raise Funds with Paper Cranes

When the Centennial High Schools students from Mr.

Coleman's Community 101 classroom began to choose nonprofits to fund, organizations helping those with cancer were at the top of the list.

"I was completely blown away by the students' passion, professionalism, understanding and thorough evaluation of our organization. Kudos to the students of Centennial High School for choosing to get involved in our community, and to The Oregon Community Foundation for facilitating philanthropic learning."
Krystal Ten Kley, Children's Cancer Association

Although the Harry & Marguerite Kendall Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation and the PGE Foundation provided the students with grantmaking funds, they wanted to do more. The students made paper cranes and charged $1.00 to write notes of support to children with cancer. The notes were attached to the cranes and the cranes were given to the Children's Cancer Association, along with $250 from the fundraiser.

Grant checks were then presented to the ALS Association of Oregon and SW Washington, Children's Cancer Association and KOMAK. a nonprofit organization that provides support to cancer patients. cranes

But the story doesn't end there. Because of her experience getting to know the work of these nonprofits, Nai Saephanh, one of the Community 101 lead students, will be attending Stanford in the fall and plans to major in oncology.
