Tax-Smart Charitable Giving
With Christopher Hoyt
Tuesday, January 23, 2024 12 - 1:30 pm | FREE
Today, only 9.5% of taxpayers itemize deductions and get tax benefits from charitable gifts, compared to over 30% of taxpayers in the year 2017. Professor Hoyt will explain the challenges and solutions for getting income tax deductions from charitable gifts since the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, including strategies such as “bunching” gifts with donor advised funds and making qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) from IRAS. He will also explain the new law that permits individuals to transfer up to $50,000 from an IRA to a CRT or to acquire a charitable and gift annuity, and situations when the family gets the greatest benefit from naming a charitable remainder trust as the beneficiary of a retirement account.
Christopher Hoyt is a Professor of Law at the University of Missouri (Kansas City) School of Law where he teaches courses in the area of federal income taxation, charitable organizations and retirement plans. Previously, he was with the law firm of Spencer, Fane, Britt & Browne in Kansas City, Missouri. He received an undergraduate degree in economics from Northwestern University and he received dual law and accounting degrees from the University of Wisconsin.

The marketplace has also drastically changed for financial advisors. New technology and ubiquitous access to financial information and resources have created an environment of ever increasing commoditization. With change, however, comes opportunity. This presentation will review these seismic shifts in wealth transfer planning and professional services, how these changes are affecting the financial services industry, and practical recommendations on how to connect with a new type of client and their heirs and thrive in the marketplace today.
