In this highly interactive session, Bryan will present the history, growth and current status of donor advised funds – the fastest growing charitable vehicle over the last 20 years. Four distinct case studies will cover complex charitable planning dilemmas where donor advised funds are the ideal solution. He’ll present a cross-disciplinary approach touching on legal, tax, investment and financial planning techniques unique to each charitable case.

Bryan Clontz is the founder and president of Charitable Solutions, LLC, specializing in non-cash asset receipt, gift annuity risk management, emergency assistance funds, and virtual currency appraisals. He also serves as Senior Partner at Ekstrom Alley Clontz & Associates, a community foundation consulting firm. With leadership experience at United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Bryan brings extensive expertise to charitable planning. He holds advanced degrees in business, risk management, financial services, and a Ph.D. in retirement and financial planning. A Certified Financial Planner and holder of multiple designations, his insights have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, and Forbes.

In this presentation, Professor James brings together scientific and demographic research from a range of end-of-life decisions to uncover remarkably consistent principles of what works in persuasive communication. Understanding this “hidden code” will change the way you think, and talk, about estate planning and financial giving.

Russell James, J.D., Ph.D., CFP®, is a chaired professor in the School of Financial Planning at Texas Tech University, where he directs the graduate program in Charitable Financial Planning. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Law, he earned accolades for his work in gift and estate taxation and holds a Ph.D. in consumer economics with a focus on charitable giving. Previously, he served as Director of Planned Giving and later as president of Central Christian College, where he led two capital campaigns, oversaw debt-free construction projects, and tripled enrollment. Dr. James has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, authored books on philanthropy, and been featured in major outlets such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. His financial neuroimaging research was profiled in The Wall Street Journal’s SmartMoney magazine.

When financial and estate planning professionals can bring the concept of “legacy” down to earth, conversations and strategies find a level that can be deeply satisfying for both clients and advisors. Practical approaches for doing so will be the focus of this experiential webinar. Attendees will consider both the tangible and intangible dimensions of wealth as a foundation for complete legacy planning. Of particular emphasis will be the value of ethical wills and letters of wishes as tools for legacy planning that goes beyond the mere distribution of assets.
