Brigit Kavanagh
Attorney, 1601 Law Group
November 3, 2026 | 12 – 1:30 pm | FREE
This one hour presentation is followed by an optional 30 minute Q&A session.
With the rise in popularity of Donor Advised Funds, leaving a philanthropic legacy is easier than ever. Yet the decision whether to use a Donor Advised Fund, private foundation, private operating foundation, supporting organization or another vehicle is complex and nuanced. Not knowing the differences between these giving vehicles and the differences in tax deductions often leads to disappointed donors and clients. In this session, we will discuss options for philanthropic planning so that as advisors, we can empower donors and clients to make informed decisions best suited to the particular philanthropy they envision for themselves and their family.
For over two decades, Brigit Kavanagh has focused on the laws of nonprofit organizations and charitable gift planning, advising charities, foundations, and their donors on nonprofit tax, trust, and corporate law. Prior to launching her own firm in 2016, Brigit practiced with the San Francisco law firm of Adler & Colvin, handling a range of matters for public charities, private foundations, and charitable donors. Brigit has expertise in complex private foundation matters, such as set asides, out of corpus distributions, program related investments, and international grant-making, as well as public charity matters such as public support, donor advised funds, supporting organizations, and excess benefit transactions. Brigit is also experienced with planned giving and charitable gift planning matters, such as endowments, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable gift annuities.
